John portrays His best friend on the Cross as unbelievably Triumphant. Jesus gives John care of His mother, Mary, and with His dying words, declares, "It is finished." And so we see three very different theologically motivated portraits of Jesus in the Gospels at the cross: the suffering servant, the forgiving one, and the triumphant one.
