DAY 15 OF 18

Word of the Day: Guide

Definition: One that leads or directs another’s way; a person who directs another’s conduct or course of life (Merriam-Webster, 2015).

Ever experience going somewhere that you are unfamiliar with and being completely dependent on the GPS system that is providing direction? Or, how about being under a leader that continuously changes directives that they give you because they are a scatter-brain? The truth of the matter is, most people do not enjoy walking into things without clear directives or some sort of guide to use as a source. Gratefully, God, being the source of all sources, has already thought out communication with His children. Believers have the word of God, the Holy Spirit and God Himself to use as a guide.

The word of God serves as a resource that is full of lessons to be applied to everyday living. It is essential to study it and even use study aides to acquire the knowledge that it offers. Reading the word of God shapes the believer and assists in navigation. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). It also reproves and corrects the believer, which ultimately promotes growth. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and of discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

The Holy Spirit also serves as a guide who will speak to the believer. A lot of people call it their spirit, a spirit, their conscience, etc. However, the Holy Spirit will nudge you when you are in the danger zone of sin, lead you out of a potential disaster and will comfort you as well. John 14:26 says, “These things I have spoken to you, while abiding with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”

God speaks to His people not only through His word, but through other people as well. “This is the third time I am coming to you. Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses” (2 Corinthians 13:1). Also, when you pay attention to it, God will allow signs to happen for someone to catch because it is so specific to something that they previously prayed for or thought about.

Having a guide is important because it facilitates the leading to a destination. Ultimately, the destination for believers in Christ is Heaven, and God has provided guides for us to meet Him.

Action: Tune into seeking guidance through the word of God and the Holy Spirit. The next time you pray about something or even think about it, start to be vigilant about signs that God will allow you see.

Prayer: Father, thank You so much for being my Guide. Please help me to embrace Your word, even while being reproved because I know that You care, and this is why I must be changed. Thank You for the Holy Spirit always being concerned about me and being that voice of reason when facing decisions that need to be made, sin, etc. As I continue to grow in You, please help me to see who is being used by You when they are speaking to me regarding our journey. All these things I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Affirmation: I embrace my guides: the word of God, the Holy Spirit and connects that God use to confirm my path on my journey.
