I Love You

You are loved.

You tell me, “I love you.”

And I love you back.

You love from my first love, and I fold you in. Your first love is what excites you about beginning your day, what brings reassurance to your heart, what brings a measured step and exhilaration, too.

With first love you are steadfast and eager and curious and expectant. Your heart wakes to hope—hope of being together, hope that there will be time together. You desire, simply, to be with the one you love, side by side.

When you love, you see with open eyes and open heart the look in your loved one’s eyes, the sound of their voice. When you love, you listen close for more. You are attentive and eager to absorb experiences—moments— with the one you love.

I know first love.

But I know a heart of hesitancy, too.

I know doubt—how you are made and what you are capable of and made to love.
