Two beasts, both given power by Satan, are described here. The first beast uses political power to resist God and the second uses false religion. These beasts can be seen throughout human history, but probably also refer to future leaders who will have incredible power prior to Jesus’ return.

We live in a troubled world with ongoing conflict, much of it using religion as justification. These conflicts come and go, but we never reach the end of them. In fact, they seem to perpetually get worse. These conflicts are evidence that humanity cannot solve its own problems. We not only need Jesus to solve our personal sin problems, but the world needs him as well.
