With God's Help: Devotions from Time of Graceنموونە
Can I get rid of doubt? I doubt it
A friend of mine who doesn’t go to church told me once, “I wish I could believe. I’d like to believe.” Next to idolatry, i.e., the desire to worship something or someone other than the Lord, doubt is among the oldest of sins. Satan massaged Eve’s appetite for independence and planted doubts in her mind that sprouted into flagrant disobedience and rebellion.
Do you have trouble understanding and accepting God’s lordship over you? If so, you have company. “Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, ‘I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief’” (Mark 9:24). All Christians have a mixture of doubts and faith in their hearts; the struggle to master fear and doubt is part of our mission.
Our own reason, emotions, and experiences are vulnerable to satanic manipulation. Only God’s Word drives out fear and doubt. Only the Word has satisfactory explanations to the origin and purpose of the human race; only the Word tells the truth about good and evil; only the Word reveals what is coming next at the end of our lives. Pray for faith. Read the Word. Hear the Word. Receive the Supper. Give God your doubts.
