The Right Motive for Fasting

A study of fasting practiced by Jesus and by the great leaders of the Bible reveals what God means by fasting. Biblical fasting means more than just abstaining from food; it means to abstain from food in order to concentrate on God. Biblical fasting involves prayer and intense supplication before God. Very simply, fasting means being so consumed with a matter that it becomes more important than food. Note the words, “when you fast” in verses 16 and 17. Jesus assumed believers fasted; yet so few have actually practiced such an intense seeking of the Lord. There are several wrong reasons to fast, such as attempting to gain a sense of God’s approval or to fulfill a religious act or even for recognition. Those are all wrong motives for fasting, and fasting for any purpose other than to meet God is condemned. Therefore, when you fast, fast “only to your Father” (v 18). 

Since every believer is expected to fast, we are to fast before God, not before other people. Fasting is to be to God alone. In meeting God all alone, we demonstrate our dependency on God and His provision. Fasting the right way has its reward. How much greater is God’s reward than the recognition of other people! God’s acceptance and eternal reward is enough for genuine believers. Humble yourself before God and seek him intentionally through fasting, and you will greatly reap the benefits of experiencing God in this powerful way!
