Discovering Wisdomنموونە
DAY EIGHT: Fame, Money — and Grace
Priorities matter, and in a secular culture that increasingly values the "things of today" over an eternal perspective, it's essential to focus in on what really counts.
Proverbs 8 makes it clear that wisdom — and, thus, reliance upon God — is the most important of priorities. While the world tells us that the quest for money, fame, power and "things" is the most essential goal in life, the Bible speaks quite differently.
"Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold," verse 10 reads, with verse 11 continuing, "For wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her."
It's countercultural not to obsessively value money and materialism, but the reality of the absolute importance of wisdom is right before us. You don't have to look hard to find scores of people — celebrities, wealthy businessmen and others — who have so much in life, yet understand and experience so little of what truly matters.
Some of these people have plenty of money and lots of notoriety, yet lack wisdom and happiness. The reality is: amassing wealth and fame while ignoring God and wisdom is anything but prudent.
Sadly, many of us (myself included) forget this reality, as we get sucked into the trap of the "here and now."
It takes a certain level of strength to say "no" to something that could be lucrative simply because we know it isn't wise or isn't something God wants for us. It also takes a lot of focus and relational interaction with God to stay on the right spiritual track.
Luckily, we can rely on God and his Word to help guide these decisions and actions.
In the end, wisdom is key — but it's something we must keep seeking through prayer and a daily relationship with God. Proverbs 8:13-14 reads:
"To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight, I have power."
A healthy "fear" of God is a good thing. He created us, He loves us — and he has a plan for our lives. Let's remember that as we embark on our individuals paths in a world that lacks wisdom.
Despite the drought around us, God's fountain is always flowing, and He's always ready to let us drink from it. But that decision is really up to us.
Stop for a moment and pray for discernment for the day and for wisdom for those around you.

About this Plan
What is knowledge? That's a question that is becoming increasingly difficult for our modern world to answer. That said, the Bible is pretty clear about where knowledge comes from, what it is, and where we can obtain it. This 10-day study from Billy Hallowell offers some much-needed guidance for living in the modern era.
