The Protection of God
Jesus concluded His Model Prayer by saying: Do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Jesus emphasized forgiveness because it, above all else, shows that a person understands what God has done.
Both of these statements lead us to confront the real evil that’s within us and around us. God’s commitment to our good and our growth into the image of Jesus is sealed by the Holy Spirit in our lives. His will is for us to grow in holiness. Therefore, we must trust that God won’t lead us into temptation. Further, when we’re tempted, we should remember that the desire for sin still lurks inside us.
Fighting sin daily requires the help of God to be successful. We need His power to daily say no to the assaults of the devil. We need His faith producing grace to show us that, through Him, we can overcome all our temptation and say yes to all that God has called us to in Christ.
Yet, Christians should be aware but not fearful of the devil because God has already won the ultimate war through the death and resurrection of Jesus. When we pray for God to deliver us from evil, we’re reminded that God is all-powerful and that Jesus has already defeated the enemy.
