This New Covenant World
Perhaps like you, I’ve read this psalm so many times before, but there are some things that I didn’t immediately understand. Verse 10 is where I would always stop. I could not figure out what it meant. What does it mean that the world is established? Isn’t the world already established? Or is the verse referring to something to come? I understood the part of the verse that talks about the reign of God. It means the rule of God, the kingdom of God. It’s prophetic—a word concerning when God would come to rule and reign on the earth.
Psalm 96 is a beautiful prophetic psalm that foretells the coming of the kingdom of God and the establishment of the new covenant. Verse 10 is not talking about some physical world being established. It is talking about the world we live in covenantally. God established this new covenant world that we live in now, which is a world of salvation, righteousness, the move of the Holy Spirit, and worship. Where you are now—experiencing praise, worship, the Holy Spirit, prophecy, miracles, healings, the presence of God, righteousness, salvation, and joy—is the world that God established through His covenant.
