Unblinded Faith: Open Your Eyes To God’s Promisesنموونە
Unfailing Love
When you search the Scriptures, you find multiple places that describe God’s character as compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry, and rich in unfailing love. And yet, would you agree that it is not always easy to believe that the Scriptures are preaching truth? Is that because the consequences of sin—your own or someone else’s—make it feel as though God’s compassion and mercy are far off? Do you feel as if His anger has been unleashed upon you alone? Is His unfailing love seemingly out of reach?
Probably the biggest challenge for me is to believe that our behavior is not at the center of God’s focus. For far too long I thought that for God to show me His compassion, mercy and love, I had to earn it. And trust me, that was never going to happen. What a relief to discover that God couldn’t love me any more or any less than He already does. The same is true for you.
God’s mercy isn’t linked to a measuring stick. He’s not some hot-tempered, irrational killjoy ready to ruin our lives with unquenchable anger.
God’s love for us is not based on our performance, but it is reserved for those of us who have been adopted into His family through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:4-5). He instructs us, His children, to show Him reverence and seek to love Him with all our being as He chooses to keep His covenant and remembers His promises from everlasting to everlasting (Psalm 103:17-18; Deuteronomy 6:5).
God is always compassionate and merciful, not easily angered and unfailing in love.
God is always who He says He is and will always do what He says He will do.
In what ways have you witnessed the compassion, mercy, patience and unfailing love of God in your life in the last week, month, year and maybe even lifetime?
