Why Do I Exist? Devotions From Time of Grace

DAY 3 OF 4

What is my purpose?

When the stagecoach brought you to Laramie or Cheyenne, that was the end of the line for you. The driver might have helped you get your trunk out of the boot, but then he climbed back into the driver’s seat, shook the reins of the horses, and clattered off. You were on your own.

Some people might feel birthed and abandoned in life. They have not yet gotten to know their Creator, who is intensely interested in how they are doing. We weren’t just made and then dumped—he wants to develop a relationship with us. St. Paul wanted his Athenian listeners to experience the hope and fulfillment that come from reconnecting with the source of life itself: “God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being’” (Acts 17:27,28).

Are you a parent? Did you drive home from the hospital and leave your firstborn lying in the nursery with the other newborns? Of course not! You carefully nestled the babe in your arms (old school) or packed him or her carefully into your brand-new car seat (present times) and proudly brought the newest member of your family home. In the same way, the meaning and purpose of your life will unfold as you come to know God through his Word.

He’s not far from you. He wants you close to him.
