Grace Revealed: Finding God's Strength In Any Crisis

DAY 4 OF 7

Feeling Unfulfilled in Your Career: Pray for and Trust in God’s Grace

You Are Not Alone

According to a 2017 Gallup poll, 51 percent of full-time American employees aren’t engaged at work—they feel no real connection to their jobs and tend to do the bare minimum. Another 16 percent are “actively disengaged”—they resent their jobs, gripe to co-workers, and drag down office morale.

Skip’s Story

Skip Masback was an attorney who built a stellar reputation for “public-interest lawyering” as a partner in a Washington, DC law firm. But after seventeen years of exhausting effort, his life no longer made sense. He cried himself to sleep most nights, hiding his misery from his wife and children.

One day at a Washington Metro train station, an evangelist slipped a tract containing Bible verses into Skip’s hand. He absentmindedly slipped it into his wallet. Later, when he read the Nativity story in Luke’s Gospel, an overwhelming sense of peace and contentment washed over him. In Luke 2:10 an angel tells the shepherds, “Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.”

And then something even more remarkable happened. Skip writes, “One day, I opened my eyes in the midst of my recitations to see Jesus sitting calmly on the Metro seat facing mine. He looked pretty much the way He’s pictured in popular paintings…All I remember Him saying was some gentle words of assurance: ‘Skip, do not be anxious. I am going to take care of everything.’ As quickly as He had come, He was gone.”

Returning God’s Grace

Skip left his law practice and entered Yale Divinity School to prepare for ordination. He became the youth minister and then senior minister of one of the largest churches in Connecticut for 19 years.

In 2013, Skip joined Professor Miroslav Volf as the managing director of Volf’s Yale Center for Faith and Culture at Yale Divinity School. Skip also is the founder and director of the Yale Youth Ministry Institute. His passion is training youth ministers and developing transformative youth ministries throughout the United States and beyond.

If you feel unfulfilled or even miserable in your current profession, ask God to reveal His will and purpose for your life.

Bible Verse

A few verses that Skip turns to when he needs to feel God’s presence are Romans 12:1-2.
