God's Gifts in Our World: Stars
Do you live in a city like me? If you do, the stars are almost invisible because of “light pollution” from streetlights and neon signs. But when we urban dwellers get out to the country on a clear night, we have a “Wow” moment. Know what I mean?
What do you make of the stars? Are they just billions upon billions of flaming leftover fragments from the Big Bang? Are they the mysterious controllers of human destiny, as the horoscopes tell you? Or might you see in these bright diamonds studding the velvety dark the great Designer’s intent to give silent beauty even to the night?
God thinks they are also symbols of his faithfulness in carrying out the plan of salvation for the world. He once told a man named Abraham, “Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them. . . . So shall your offspring be” (Genesis 15:5). Know what? His plan worked. Abraham’s children, the believers with him in the divine promises, now truly number in the billions.
So next time you feel shaky in your faith, head out of town, pull off to the side of the road, and look up. You will see billions of reasons to trust in God’s power. After you’re done saying, “Wow!” realize that it’s going to be all right.
