FCA: The Relentless Devotional For Competitors

DAY 20 OF 31

Who’s Your Spotter?

Amy Elrod

READY:

“For the eyes of Yahweh roam throughout the earth to show Himself strong for those whose hearts are completely His.” – 2 Chronicles 16:9a

SET:

As a college athlete, I spent countless hours in the weight room lifting in order to gain strength, prevent injury and help my performance on the soccer field. My teammates and I would spot each other when we lifted and would intervene or assist when the weight became too much. There was assurance knowing my teammate was ready and waiting to help me if I couldn’t finish the last repetition.

Being a good spotter meant I had to be ready at a moment’s notice. At any time, I could be called on to catch the bar if the weight became too heavy for my teammate to lift it on her own strength. I had to keep a close eye to make sure I intervened at the right moment – placing the weight safely back on the rack.

Like my experiences in the weight room, God’s the ultimate spotter in our lives. He promises that He’s ready and waiting to intervene and show Himself strong when we call on His name for help. And He’s ready to take the weight when we can’t carry it on our own.

As we continue to seek the Lord with all our hearts, let us rely on the Great Spotter who is watching eagerly to give us strength in times of need.

GO:

  1. How have you ever benefitted from a spotter?
  2. In times of trouble, do you trust God and rely on His strength, or do you try and lift the weight on your own?
  3. How would you compete differently if you had the confidence that God’s watching out for you when you didn’t have the strength to carry out the task He’s given you?

WORKOUT:

Matthew 11:28-30
Psalm 59:16
1 Corinthians 1:25

OVERTIME:

Christ, thank you for being my Ultimate Spotter. I pray for the faith to trust that You are always there, watching and waiting to protect me from harm. Amen.
