God, Is That You? Discerning the Voice of Godনমুনা

Elijah was no ordinary man. He was a mighty prophet of God, one who had seen miracles, called down fire from heaven, and even outrun a chariot under the power of the Holy Spirit. If anyone knew how to hear from God, surely it was Elijah. And yet, in his moment of fear and exhaustion, he found himself struggling to recognize God’s voice.
How often does this happen to us? Even as believers who have walked with God for years, we can still find ourselves looking for Him in all the wrong places. We expect His direction to come through dramatic signs, powerful moments, or miraculous confirmations, but sometimes it's just a whisper.
Discerning God’s voice isn’t about chasing after the spectacular. It’s about learning to recognize His presence, even in the quiet. But that’s easier said than done. Our world is noisy. Our minds are cluttered. When we’re desperate for answers, we may assume God is silent simply because He’s not speaking the way we expect.
Elijah had just experienced one of the greatest victories of his life, yet in the next chapter, he’s afraid, discouraged, and even asking God to take his life. His emotions clouded his ability to hear clearly. Isn’t that the case for us too? Fear, disappointment, and busyness can drown out God’s whisper if we’re not careful.
Even seasoned Christians can miss the voice of God when we’re looking for Him in the wrong places. We want a dream, a prophetic word, or a supernatural encounter when sometimes all He’s asking us to do is be still and listen.
God’s whisper requires intimacy. It means we must get close to Him, close enough to hear the soft, gentle guidance of His Spirit. The question isn’t whether God is speaking; the question is, are we listening?
How to Discern the Whisper of God
1. Quiet the Noise – God won’t compete with the distractions of life. Make space for stillness in prayer and Scripture.
2. Check Your Expectations – He may not speak the way you think He will, but He will speak. Be open to hearing Him in unexpected ways.
3. Pay Attention to Peace – God’s voice often comes with a deep, unshakable peace, even when the circumstances don’t make sense.
4. Stay in the Word – God’s whisper will never contradict His written Word. If you’re struggling to hear, go back to Scripture.
5. Remember Past Faithfulness – Just because He’s speaking differently now doesn’t mean He’s absent. Look at how He’s guided you before.
Think it Over
- Have you ever missed God’s voice because you were looking for Him in the wrong place?
- What distractions might be keeping you from hearing His whisper?
- How can you create intentional space to listen for His guidance?
Elijah had to step out of the cave to hear God. Maybe it’s time for us to do the same. Be still. Lean in. Listen. The whisper is there.
Prayer
Lord, help me to quiet the noise in my heart and discern Your voice, even when it comes as a whisper. Teach me to trust that You are always speaking, even when I don’t recognize how You choose to do it. In Jesus' name, Amen.
