More Than Just a Story - the Book of John

DAY 8 OF 56

This passage recognizes both the divinity of Christ and the role that John the Baptist and his disciples play. In Chapter 1, the Pharisees questioned whether John believed he was the Christ or Elijah (John 1:19–25). When asked, John proclaimed that he was making “straight the way for the Lord.” In this section, John further exalts Christ’s divinity. It seems as though John’s disciples may be jealous or concerned about Jesus’s growing popularity. By describing himself as the "friend of the bridegroom" (v. 29), John illustrates his joy in seeing Jesus, the bridegroom, take center stage. This demonstrates John's humility and understanding of his purpose. His statement, "He must become greater, and I must become less" (v. 30), encapsulates the essence of Christian discipleship: exalting Christ above oneself.

For further reading: I found John’s metaphor regarding the bridegroom particularly interesting. Jesus offers a similar metaphor in Matthew 9:15, Mark 2:19–20, and Luke 5:34–35.

Reflection Questions

  • How can John’s statement, “He must become greater, and I must become less,” guide your attitude toward serving others and living for Christ?
  • What does this passage teach about Jesus’ divine authority, and how should that influence your trust in Him?
  • In what areas of your life might you struggle with surrendering control and allowing God’s will to take precedence?
