Witness of Hope: Reflecting on Jesus's Suffering During Lent

DAY 1 OF 4

Life is full of challenges, pain, and suffering. These struggles often seem overwhelming, casting long shadows over our days and tempting us to despair. In Romans 8:18, Paul offers a perspective that lifts our eyes beyond the immediate pain to a horizon filled with eternal hope. This verse invites us to reframe our trials in light of the incomparable glory awaiting those who trust in Christ.

Present Suffering Is Real

Paul doesn’t deny the reality of suffering. In fact, his life was a vivid testimony to hardship. Beaten, imprisoned, shipwrecked, and ultimately martyred, Paul knew suffering intimately. Yet, he didn’t shy away from acknowledging it. This is important for us as believers because it reminds us that experiencing pain and hardship is not a sign of spiritual failure but a part of life in a broken world.

When Paul writes, "the sufferings of this present time," he refers not only to personal struggles but also to the collective groaning of humanity and creation. We live in a world marred by sin, and the effects of this brokenness are visible everywhere: sickness, loss, injustice, and death. But as heavy as these burdens may feel, Paul assures us they are not the whole story.

The Weight of Glory

Paul shifts our focus from the present to the future with a staggering statement: the sufferings of now are not worth comparing to the glory to come. This is not an attempt to minimize our pain but to magnify our hope. The glory Paul speaks of is the fullness of God’s redemptive work—when we will see Christ face-to-face and experience the complete restoration of all things.

Consider the word "glory." In Scripture, it often conveys weight, splendor, and beauty beyond description. The glory awaiting us is not fleeting or superficial; it is eternal and substantial. Imagine the brightest joy you've ever felt and multiply it infinitely—that begins to scratch the surface of what God has prepared for His children.

This future glory includes:

  1. Perfect Relationship with God: No more sin, no more barriers—just unbroken fellowship with our Creator.
  2. Renewed Bodies and Souls: Freed from pain, decay, and death, we will experience life as God intended.
  3. Restored Creation: The heavens and the earth will be made new, a place where righteousness dwells.
  4. Eternal Joy and Fulfillment: Every longing of our hearts will be satisfied in Christ.

Shaping Our Perspective

Romans 8:18 encourages us to adopt an eternal perspective. When we view our trials through the lens of God’s promises, we begin to see them in their proper context. They are temporary, but the glory is eternal. They are painful, but the glory is joyous. They are heavy, but the glory far outweighs them.

This doesn’t mean we ignore our struggles or pretend they don’t hurt. Rather, we hold them up to the light of God’s Word and allow His truth to give us strength. We can endure because we know our suffering is not meaningless; God uses even our pain to shape us into the image of Christ (Romans 8:29).

Living in Hope

How do we live in the hope of this glory while still enduring the trials of today?

  1. Focus on God’s Promises: Spend time meditating on passages like Romans 8:18 that remind us of what’s to come. Let these truths anchor your heart when life feels overwhelming.
  2. Pray Honestly: Bring your pain, doubts, and fears to God. He is big enough to handle your struggles and tender enough to comfort you in them.
  3. Encourage One Another: Share your burdens and hopes with fellow believers. We are called to bear one another’s burdens and remind each other of the hope we have in Christ.
  4. Serve with Purpose: Use your trials as a platform to minister to others. Often, the comfort we receive from God equips us to comfort those around us.
  5. Fix Your Eyes on Jesus: Hebrews 12:2 encourages us to look to Christ, who endured the cross for the joy set before him. He is our ultimate example and source of strength.

A Final Encouragement

Whatever you are facing today, take heart. Your suffering is real, but it is not eternal. God sees your pain and is with you in it. More than that, He has prepared a glory for you that will make today’s trials seem light and momentary by comparison (2 Corinthians 4:17).

Hold on to hope. The best is yet to come. And when the day comes that you stand in the presence of God’s glory, you will know with absolute certainty that every tear, every trial, and every sorrow was worth it.

Let this promise give you courage and strength to endure with faith, knowing that the glory to be revealed is not just ahead of you—it is being prepared for you, right now, by the hands of a loving Father.
