OVERFLOW

DAY 12 OF 21

SERVE THE NEEDY

One of my earliest memories is enjoying a Happy Meal at McDonalds with my mom. I was 5 years old, and I remember watching a disheveled-looking man walk up to order his food. What stood out to me was that he asked how much each menu item cost. He discovered that he could not afford anything, and I remember him asking the cashier, “How much would it cost just for the bread, not the meat and cheese, just the bread?” He didn’t even have enough coins for that. Defeated and humiliated, the man sat at a table near us with a small cup of water. What happened next, I will never forget. My mom quietly went to the counter, ordered a complete meal, and delivered it to the man with a caring pat on the shoulder. My mom returned to the table, and we finished our lunch together.

This small act of kindness impacted me. My mom didn’t even have to explain in words what she showed me so clearly with her actions. Her love for God compelled her to help someone in need.

In James 2:15-16, James tells us

“If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, stay warm, and be well fed,” but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it?”

Faith and action go hand in hand. This is part of living in the overflow. How are you living out your faith to serve people in need?

You might believe that you lack the resources to serve others. You might say that you have nothing to contribute to clothe someone or provide a meal. Connect with your church or other Christ-followers and figure out what resources you DO have and work together to serve the people around you who are in need. As God’s goodness and grace has spilled over in your life – let it overflow in acts of service to others.
