The Gospel of Luke

DAY 11 OF 14

The Prodigal Son

Many people, including non-Christians, are familiar with the parable of the prodigal son. This parable shows the unconditional love and joy that comes when a lost person returns to God. All too often though, our own experiences color our understanding of the Bible. Some of us grow up in extremely strict homes with high standards and low mercy. Others of us grow up in homes without the means to provide a family inheritance. Like many things in the Bible, our own experiences in life can affect the way we understand (and ultimately believe) what we read. Jesus makes it clear that each and every one of us has the right to our Father’s inheritance. We are humans, after all, made in His image; we are His children. God is also willing to show us a love that transcends our mistakes, regardless of how egregious we may believe them to be. Regardless of your experiences with your earthly family, you shouldn’t allow it to affect your belief in your Heavenly Father. God’s inheritance is great and it is yours by birthright! God is rich in mercy and will forgive your mistakes!

The truth is that all believers are the prodigal son. Before we were Christians, all of us had gone astray and squandered the gifts that God had given us. Many of us chased the ways of the world and found a profound emptiness in them. Others of us wanted to live “our way” but found we were wholly incapable of making the best decisions and the shame and regret began piling up. Thankfully, God was always ready for us to return to Him. God eagerly awaits the return of each of His sons and daughters, wanting to offer them grace, forgiveness, and a fresh start! The parable of the Prodigal Son invites us to embrace God’s love and mercy and to reflect that same grace to others who may also need forgiveness.

Questions to ask yourself:

1. Are there areas where I’ve been seeking fulfillment outside of God’s will, and how can I return to Him today?

2. Do I accept His grace and restoration, or do I struggle to believe I am worthy of His love after making mistakes?

What’s next?

1. Whether in your personal life or in the lives of others, recognize and honor God’s restorative work, rejoicing in His redemptive power and the new life He offers!

2. If you’ve been drifting or running from God, make a conscious decision to return to Him with a repentant heart. Acknowledge your need for His grace and forgiveness, knowing that He is always ready to welcome you back with open arms.

Pray this prayer

Father, I am grateful for your steadfast love and faithfulness towards me. Just like the father in the parable of the prodigal son, you wait with open arms, ready to welcome me home no matter how far I’ve strayed. Thank you for your never-ending forgiveness and your mercy that fully restores.
