Discover the Power of the Bible

DAY 3 OF 3

How do you read the Word in a way that lingers?

When we believe the Word and apply it in our lives, when we walk in it and fully make it our own, ‘flood our minds with it, and ‘sow’ it in our hearts, we come to walk in a life that is unmatched!

Therefore ‘feed’ your inner man, so that the truth about you in Christ can start becoming more visible in your life!

It says in Joshua 1:8:

‘This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.’

You must meditate in it ‘day and night’.

Do you know why the Bible says that, because then the Word starts lingering. As you take the Word in frequently, you think of nothing else and start renewing your mind. You learn to think like God. You get to know His will and what you have received from Him: which identity and authority you have in Him. (Read our plans about them!)

Of course, you don’t literally read the Bible day and night, it is about the way in which you read the Bible and how it has its effect in your heart. We want to make that practical for you. Here are some examples that can help you to let that which you are reading sink into your heart.

Before you do anything: work the ground

Make sure that your heart is good ground to sow into, as the parable of the Sower in Mark 4:14-20 illustrates. Only good ground can bear thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold fruit. You prepare good ground by creating space for practically nothing else but the Word and leaving no room for other doctrines, ideologies, beliefs, and worldly philosophies.

Example 1: Reciting

Choose a certain Bible verse or a certain Bible passage that speaks to you.

You write that verse or that passage on a piece of paper.

Immediately say each word that you write out loud.

Repeat this multiple times.

Example 2: Memorize

Always ask the Holy Spirit to help you memorize. He teaches and brings to remembrance (John 14:26).

Choose a Bible verse and repeat each word. Repeat it as many times as you can until you can easily recite the passage without thinking.

Let what you have learned incubate within you for at least a week! Write the verse on a Post-it and stick it to a mirror so that you see it every day. Do that until you can dream it, so to speak, and the verse is stored in your long-term memory.

Example 3: Bible study

Choose a Bible story or passage and write it down sentence by sentence. Look at all the references that belong to the passage and write those down as well, including their references. Look for the context, the background, and the writer so that you get a complete picture of the how and when.

Choose what suits you

These 3 ways are only examples and tools to help you along. Of course, you may develop and apply your own methods. Do what works. Be actively and intensely busy with God’s Word. That causes depth and more knowledge and insight.

Many blessings!
