Wisdom, Worldview, and Work

We are each given a unique set of gifts, callings, and abilities. How we use them in service to God defines our purpose. There’s an old story of Martin Luther, the great sixteenth-century monk and theologian, that sheds light on this beautifully.

A cobbler once approached Luther with an earnest question: “How can I serve God?”

Luther, with a practical wisdom that still resonates today, asked, “What is your work now?”

“I’m a shoemaker,” the man replied.

Luther’s answer was simple yet profound: “Then make good shoes and sell them at a fair price.”

Notice what Luther didn’t say. He didn’t suggest the man create “Christian shoes” or abandon his trade to become a pastor. Instead, he affirmed that the work of a shoemaker—when done with integrity, excellence, and fairness—glorifies God just as much as the work of a monk or a theologian.

According to the Bible, God is deeply concerned with craftsmanship. In Exodus, we see God calling skilled crafters like Bezalel, Oholiab, and others to create with excellence and beauty, reflecting the Creator’s own attention to detail (Exodus 31:1–6).

What does this mean for us today? It means that serving God isn’t limited to explicitly “spiritual” work. Whether you’re crafting shoes, raising children, leading a team, or writing code, your work matters. Do it skillfully, with good motives, goals, and standards. It’s not about the job title; it’s about the heart behind the task. Does it reflect God’s glory? Does it contribute to the good of others? These are the questions that shape a life of purpose.

The challenge, then, is to approach every endeavor with diligence, skill, and a spirit of service. The effort you pour into your craft—whether it’s building, teaching, or problem-solving—becomes an act of worship when offered to God. Colossians 3:17 reminds us, "Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."

Today, remember this: God calls us to work, not just for a paycheck or recognition, but to reflect His character in everything we do. Honor Him in the details. Help others through your work. Pursue excellence, not for others’ applause, but for the glory of the One who gave you your gifts in the first place.

God, thank You for the talents You’ve entrusted to me. Help me to use them with integrity and purpose, bringing glory to Your name and blessing to others. Grant me the strength to be trustworthy, kind, and diligent in all I do. Amen.
