Two and a Half Acres of Faith

DAY 4 OF 7

Day 4: No One but Jesus:

Sterling and Jean Miller’s long-awaited dream of a family had finally come true. After years of devastating miscarriages and the loss of their son Mathias, God blessed them with the opportunity to receive legal custody of two beautiful children. Their family felt whole, and their home was filled with laughter, love, and the promises of God fulfilled. It was a season of deep joy, reminding them of Hebrews 11:1—the confidence in what they had hoped for and the assurance of God’s unseen hand at work.

But life’s joys are often interwoven with trials. Sterling and Jean received unexpected news that the biological parents of their two adopted children were reclaiming custody. They were given just thirty days to prepare to say goodbye. The heartbreak was overwhelming. These were the children they had prayed for, loved as their own, and raised with care. Now, they had to let them go. It was a season of unimaginable grief, yet they leaned into the promises of Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

In their heartbreak, the Millers clung to Jesus, the only One who could carry them through such a devastating loss. Isaiah 41:10 became their daily prayer: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.” They knew they couldn’t bear this burden alone, and they placed their trust in the God who strengthens and upholds His children.

Their faith wasn’t simply in their ability to endure but in Jesus’s ability to redeem even the hardest circumstances. In the midst of their sorrow, they made the decision to love their children fiercely during their remaining days together. They poured into them the hope, faith, and love that had always defined their family. Though the loss was crushing, Psalm 34:18 reminded them that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

As Sterling and Jean navigated this season of loss, they found that Jesus was more than their comfort—He was their source of life, their strength, and their peace. Chapter 9 of their story reminds us that in the hardest moments of life, no one but Jesus can truly sustain us. Friends and family can offer support, but only Jesus provides the rest and assurance we need when the weight of grief seems unbearable. He invites us to bring our pain to Him, promising to walk with us and uphold us through every trial.

The Millers’ story teaches us that even in seasons of loss, God’s faithfulness remains. The heartbreak of saying goodbye to their children didn’t diminish their trust in His goodness. Instead, it deepened their reliance on Jesus, the One who had carried them through every step of their journey. They chose to trust that even in their sorrow, God was working for their good and His glory.

Where in your life are you carrying a burden too heavy to bear? Maybe you’re facing loss, uncertainty, or a season of waiting. Bring it to Jesus, trusting that He alone can sustain you. Pray for His strength to guide you, His peace to calm you, and His love to uphold you. Remember that no matter how heavy the burden, you don’t have to carry it alone.

God’s faithfulness never fails. Whether you’re celebrating new beginnings or grieving heartbreaking losses, Jesus is with you, offering His rest and strength. Trust Him to guide you through every season, knowing that His plans are perfect, His love is unshakable, and His promises will never fail. Only in Him will you find the hope and peace you need to move forward.
