Three times, Peter denied having anything to do with Jesus because he was scared. Now that Jesus was in trouble, he didn’t want to be identified with him. Have you ever felt embarrassed about your faith? Write a simple prayer asking God to help you to stick close to Jesus when it’s tough and you feel scared.

Cruel punishments

The Romans flogged criminals to punish them. They strapped the victim to a post and whipped them. The whip was made of leather strands with bits of metal and bone that sank into the flesh. Brutal. Then, they made a crown of sharp thorns and crushed it down onto Jesus’ head. They were mocking the whole idea that he could ever be a king.

Abba

Abba means ‘father’ or ‘pappa’. It’s the most cosy and intimate of names, such as a young child might call their dad. Jesus always prayed with this kind of intimacy, even when he was under huge pressure.
