Introduction

The Chosen is a multi-season, crowd-funded television show that dramatically depicts the life of Jesus and his disciples. It has captivated people around the world and forever changed the landscape of Christian media. It is being translated into six hundred languages, has spawned books and Bible studies, and continues to draw generations of people together to talk about the Gospels.

But it is not Scripture.

One of The Chosen’s greatest strengths is its ability to draw its audience into the biblical story. We feel as if we are there, walking with Jesus, one among his disciples. This is part of what has effected such tremendous spiritual transformation in people’s lives. But this feeling can also be dangerous. Sometimes we can mistake the events of the show for the events of Scripture; we can lose track of what is fact and what is fiction. It may become difficult to tell what is a storyline created by the writers, which Scriptures have been altered to make for better television, and what is a truly accurate portrayal of the events of the Bible.

This reading plan will look briefly at a few episodes from the first season of the show. I encourage you to read the corresponding book for a more in-depth look at how those events are conveyed in Scripture and how they reflect the realities of the world of Jesus. My goal isn’t just for you to feel like you understand the series better—I want you to understand the Bible better and what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.

The Chosen is an amazing series. But it is only amazing because of the story it tells. May this be only the beginning of your journey deeper into God’s Word.
