What It Means to “Walk in the Spirit”
There is nothing more satisfying than the truly Spirit-filled life, which is rich with hearing God’s voice and experiencing supernatural manifestations of His Spirit.
After recognizing how God has wonderfully made us in three parts (spirit, soul, and body), we need to also understand that receiving Jesus as our Savior means we are qualified to walk in the Spirit. The truth is that through Jesus, God not only qualifies us but expects us to walk in the Spirit.
If we are new creations and are indwelled by the Holy Spirit, whom God put within us, why wouldn’t we walk in the Spirit? Isn’t that what He created us to do?
The answer is a resounding yes!
Yet so many believers skip this critical part, settling for religious rules and rituals rather than authentically connecting with the Holy Spirit, experiencing His presence, and receiving His step-by-step guidance—even though walking in the Spirit is part of our divine calling as born-again children of God.
Paul encouraged those in the church to walk out their identities as new creations indwelled by the Holy Spirit and saved by grace. That’s why he wrote in Galatians 5:25, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” Another translation says, “Let us keep in step with the Spirit” (NIV). Whatever the translation the implication could not be clearer: It is possible to “live in the Spirit” (being saved) yet not “walk in the Spirit.”
Unfortunately, that is exactly where most believers live. It is not a loss only for them, because the calling to walk in the Spirit is not only for their sakes. Walking in the Spirit allows born-again people to be conduits through which the Spirit can flow and touch others. Walking in the Spirit is also a must if we are to be effective warriors in the Lion’s army. We need to have keen spiritual ears attuned to our leader’s every order, so we are ready to engage at a moment’s notice.
Fortunately, the Lord doesn’t call us and then leave us unprepared.
After He qualifies and expects us to walk in the Spirit, He gives us principles to learn and actions to take. These enhance how well we walk, but we must cooperate. Not only can we learn to live a truly Spirit-filled life, but we must want it and pursue it. Hebrews 11:6 declares, “He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
The things of the Spirit are part of our reward.
Like humans who are made with three parts (spirit, soul, and body), God consists of three persons in one.
I say consists of because God, unlike humans, was not made. He is eternal, meaning He always was, and He exists outside time. Unlike humans, God is not one being divided into three parts. Rather, He is one being consisting of three distinct, whole, and absolute persons—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. They are three personalities, yet they are one.
This is what we call the Trinity. Each person of the Godhead is equal and fully connected to the others while having distinct roles. This is a difficult concept for our limited minds to comprehend, but it’s a foundational, biblical truth that is critical to living a Spirit-filled life. It’s important because each person of the Trinity influences and empowers us in a specific way. Let’s look at some of those ways.
