The Gospel in the Old Testament

DAY 2 OF 14

As I have stated, the Message of the Gospel is all over the Old Testament. God wasted no time at all giving us a glimpse of what was to come, as we are able to see His Character displayed in the first few verses of the Bible. God looked into the darkness and spoke His first recorded words: “Let there be light.” In the very beginning, God spoke Light into darkness. This is a beautiful picture of the Gospel Message as we will see.

The imagery of Light would be used many times throughout the Bible. David says in Psalm 18, “Lord, You light my lamp; my God illuminates my darkness.” Isaiah would prophecy of Jesus in Isaiah 9:2, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness.” When Jesus came, He said of Himself in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”

You see, in the beginning, God spoke Light into the physical darkness of the world. But when Jesus came, God sent the Light into the spiritual darkness of the world. Apart from God, this world is a spiritually dark place, filled with hopelessness, despair, and strife. But God sent Christ into the world to offer Hope, Joy, and Peace. We no longer have to walk in the spiritual darkness of the world, because we can put our trust in the Light of the world.

You may be in a dark place in your life. You may be struggling with issues in your family or your job. But God is the One who speaks Light into the darkness. Remember the words of the Psalmist, “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom should I fear?”
