The Reasons for Anxiety

DAY 1 OF 3

The paragraph of Matthew 6:25-34, which reports Jesus' speech on being anxious, is almost always read without considering the first word that opens the speech: "THEREFORE".

Jesus says "Therefore I say unto you, be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment?"
These words push us to ask ourselves what the Lord said before talking about worries and to try to understand why anxiety occurs in our lives.

1. What is your heart based on?

Jesus talks about being anxious about material things. How often does this anxiety not come from the lack of what is necessary, but from the desire for what we would like and do not have, or what our heart desires to the point of forgetting what is truly important?

Let's look at verses 19 to 21: "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where thy treasure is, there will thy heart be also."

Where are we building our treasure? If it is on earth, then our hearts will be anxious. If He is in heaven, we will be confident that He provides for all our needs.
In verse 26 we read: "Behold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much more value than they?".
The birds look for blades of grass or other things to build their nests, simple things that God provides for them, not threads of silk or gold.

How are we building our house, that is, our life?
