The Real Battle

DAY 1 OF 4

Spiritual Warfare

"For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does." — 2 Corinthians 10:3

What it says

The apostle Paul acknowledged that while believers live in a physical world, their ultimate battles are spiritual in nature. In Corinth (south-central Greece, he faced criticism from opponents who judged him by worldly standards of authority and strength. To such critics, Paul clarified that he did not rely on earthly strategies to defend himself or fulfill his mission. Instead, he focused on advancing God's kingdom, trusting in divine strength rather than his human effort. This teaching echoes Jesus' reminder in John 18:36 that His kingdom is not rooted in earthly power but in spiritual truth. Paul wanted the Corinthians to understand that the real fight wasn't against him or between people but against spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:12).

What it means

In the world in which we live, it's tempting to respond to challenges with human logic, established systems of power, or even aggression. In 2 Corinthians 10:3, Paul redirects our perspective: believers are engaged in a spiritual war. This means we must resist conforming to the world's methods (Romans 12:2).Instead of relying on manipulation or pride, we must rely on faith, prayer, and God's Word as our weapons of choice. In this, we must recognize our identity as overcomers-in-Christ. As 1 John 5:4 teaches, we can only overcome the world and its challenges, as Jesus did, through faith.

When faced with conflict, ask yourself: does this issue run deeper than what it appears to be on the surface? Spiritual struggles often underlie relational or situational conflicts, both of which God equips us to address with spiritual wisdom and power.

What to do

Think about the challenges in your life right now. Are you trying to resolve them through worldly tactics like control, anger, or avoidance? Today, pray for God to help you see the spiritual dimensions of your struggles and equip you to fight His way. Reflect on how Jesus handled opposition—He trusted God's plan and fought with truth and love, never conforming to worldly expectations. How might you apply this to your situation?
