Be Thankful

DAY 1 OF 7

The Command to Be Thankful: Living with a Grateful Heart

Let’s take a moment to focus on what it means to live a life of gratitude. In Colossians, Paul gives us a clear directive: be thankful. It’s a command, not a suggestion. While we often associate gratitude with specific times of the year, like Thanksgiving, Paul’s words imply gratitude is meant to be a daily practice, a consistent part of our lives as believers. Thankfulness isn’t about marking a holiday; it’s about a posture of the heart that shapes how we engage with the world and with God.

Many of us find it easy to identify sins of commission—the things we actively do wrong. We recognize when we break a rule or fall short. But what about the things we neglect to do, the sins of omission? Gratitude falls into this category. God commands us to be thankful, yet we often overlook this. We might recognize that it’s a good idea to be thankful, but do we view it as a serious obligation? God doesn’t give commands that are unimportant. Each one is meant for our good, guiding us toward a life that reflects His character and grace.

Living with a thankful heart is more than a mindset; it’s a way of aligning our lives with God’s will. Paul’s words point out that gratitude is foundational for our spiritual well-being. When we allow thanksgiving to shape our hearts, it shifts our perspective on our circumstances, our relationships, and even our struggles. It cultivates a sense of peace, the kind of peace that lets the message of Christ dwell richly within us, influencing our actions and interactions. Gratitude isn’t just a nice thought—it’s a spiritual safeguard.

But consider the alternative. What happens when we live without thankfulness? When we fail to cultivate gratitude, we open ourselves to the risks of dissatisfaction, envy, and a hardened heart. A lack of thankfulness can distance us from God’s presence, making it harder to recognize His hand at work in our lives. It dulls our awareness of His daily mercies. In contrast, a thankful heart remains sensitive to His grace, even in challenging times.

So, as you reflect on this, think about how you can make gratitude a habit that extends beyond any holiday season. Take time to notice where God is at work in your life, in both the small blessings and the big ones. Let this practice shape your day and influence how you interact with others. Gratitude is more than a command—it’s a pathway to experiencing God’s peace and presence in deeper ways. How will you make room for a thankful heart as you move forward?
