Day 20: Do It Again!

It was Matthew Henry who said, “When God is about to extend great mercy toward His people, He first sets them to prayer.” For many years, I wondered if I could slightly modify that proclamation. If so, I would simply substitute two words: “When God is about to extend great mercy toward His people, He first sets college students to prayer.”

Think with me about the great movements and stirrings of God in revival during the past 120 years.

In 1904-05, the Welsh Revival was sparked by Evan Roberts while he was a student in his 20s. It triggered revivals in several other countries, including the United States.

It was 1970 when the famed Asbury Revival began. It spread to many other college campuses throughout the nation. Jeannine Brabon was a student who began a 30-minute prayer meeting before each chapel and then launched an all-night prayer meeting. During one of those prayer meetings, she sensed the “glory of God” and knew God was coming to her campus. Jeannine obeyed and prayed—and the rest is an amazing history.

In 1995, my phone rang. The voice on the other end told me I needed to go to Wheaton College immediately. That night, I found myself sitting in the balcony of the packed auditorium. I suddenly realized I was in the midst of a campus-shaking revival. Not surprisingly, it was preceded by students crying out in prayer, “Do it again!”—referencing previous movements on their campus.

Of course, none of us will ever forget the recent move of God that began with students at Asbury University recently. The fire fell—and I raced to witness the fire. Many of us saw it. The smoke is still on our clothes, and it will be forever. Our longing to see God do it one more time will keep us seeking—until He comes.

What if God not only hears the seeking hearts of college students this upcoming Collegiate Day of Prayer, but what if He chooses to descend upon every college campus on that day?Or what if God descended upon just one campus and it spread to others week after week for months, and even years to come? AND what if you are blessed to be a part of a prayer meeting-turned-historical movement?

Lord, You are the Great Reviver. We seek You now. Lord, do it again. And, Lord, begin Your work in me.

• Help me, Lord, to seek You as the Reviver of my soul—no substitutes (Psalm 85:6).
• Help me, Lord, to seek You now—with urgency in my heart (Hosea 10:12).
• Help me, Lord, to seek You—until You come with Your manifest presence (2 Chronicles 7:14).
