Calm in the Chaos

DAY 1 OF 7

Day 1: Mindset

In 2007, after completing a nighttime Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) training mission in the mountains of El Centro, California, two U.S. Navy HH-60H Seahawk helicopters, each carrying seven personnel, were returning to the USS Abraham Lincoln, operating 100 miles west of San Diego. Disaster struck when one of the helicopters experienced a catastrophic tail rotor failure, resulting in an explosion and forcing the pilots to ditch the aircraft into the dark, frigid waters of the Pacific Ocean. Upon impact, the helicopter’s cabin quickly filled with freezing water, tilting violently to the side, tearing off the rotors, and rolling over before sinking entirely. Miraculously, all seven crew members survived the crash and escaped the submerged wreckage.

In the other helicopter, the crew immediately transitioned from their training mindset to a real-life rescue mission. Aviation Rescue Swimmer Jesse Hubble quickly donned his wetsuit and Search and Rescue (SAR) equipment. Hovering above the survivors, the crew chief lowered Hubble into the water. Over the next 45 minutes, he tirelessly worked to assist each of the seven crashed crew members to be hoisted 70 feet up to safety.

This story demonstrates the necessity of adaptability and the power of a growth mindset. The aircrew’s ability to shift their focus and act decisively saved lives that night. While the mission had begun as a training exercise, it turned into a real test of skill, courage, and readiness.

Similarly, Scripture calls us to embrace a growth mindset in our spiritual journey. Consider Matthew the Apostle, who modeled a remarkable transformation. As a tax collector in Capernaum, Matthew likely enjoyed financial prosperity but faced social isolation and contempt. When Jesus called him to follow, Matthew immediately left behind his wealth and security for the uncertainty of discipleship. His willingness to embrace change and follow Christ wholeheartedly exemplifies a spiritual growth mindset—a readiness to leave behind the old for the new (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Matthew’s transformation led him to become one of the twelve apostles. He traveled with Jesus, witnessed His miracles and teachings, and later authored the Gospel that bears his name. Just as the rescue crew and Matthew embraced new challenges with faith and adaptability, we too are called to step out of our comfort zones, trust in God, and allow Him to guide us through life’s unexpected turns.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Reflecting on Joshua 1:9, how can you draw strength and courage from God when faced with unexpected challenges?
  2. What are some areas in your life where God might be calling you to step out of your comfort zone?
