EquipHer Vol. 9: "The Power of a Simple 'Yes' or 'No'"নমুনা
Day 4: Declining with Grace
Learning to say “No” is never easy, especially when we fear hurting someone or missing out on a connection or opportunity. However, declining with grace is an act of respect that keeps possibilities open for the future while protecting our boundaries and well-being.
However, we can choose to say “No” in a way that doesn’t completely rule out the opportunity, but rather, suggests an alternative that better aligns with our needs. A gentle “No” might sound like this: “Thank you so much for thinking of me, but unfortunately, I am unavailable at this time. If things change, I’ll be sure to reach out.” This approach allows us to safeguard our time without shutting the door entirely, leaving room for flexibility.
Colossians 4:6 tells us: “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer each person.” Grace is essential in our responses, even when we must decline. We can say “No” with humility and respect, ensuring that opportunities or relationships aren’t completely closed off. Ultimately, we must remember that a “No” is just as powerful as a “Yes.” If one door closes, it doesn’t mean better doors won’t open in the future.
As life coach Sheree Cain Jones, a dear friend of the EquipHer Movement, wisely said: “No is a complete sentence!” It doesn’t require lengthy explanations or justifications. When said with grace and respect, a “No” can pave the way for even greater opportunities—for ourselves and others.
This kind of flexibility allows us to keep bridges intact and leave doors slightly ajar for future opportunities. A gracious “No” protects our time while giving God space to work in His timing. After all, what we turn down today might return as a greater blessing tomorrow.
Reflection Questions:
- How can I maintain relationships even when I need to decline an opportunity?
- How can I learn to say a firm “No” without fearing I’ll hurt others?
Prayer:
Lord, help me to decline with grace, responding with humility and respect. Guide me to make choices that honor Your plan for my life, while keeping doors open for new opportunities in the future. Amen.
