Lasting Ever

DAY 4 OF 5

RISKY FAITH

When we got married, we boldly (and maybe somewhat naively) said to each other that we knew we were called to a risky, daring, unusual life. We didn’t know that would entail bold moves, relaunching careers, waiting in silence to hear God speak, and asking for miracles in our family; we were just certain that God would be writing a unique story with our future.

Risky faith is depending on Jesus because we’re doing things we simply could not do on our own. It’s taking action based on calling rather than conventional wisdom or practicality. It’s stepping up to the plate knowing we don’t have what we need to accomplish the task on our own but trusting that God will supply it to us based on His Word, a Holy Spirit nudge, or just a curious question mark.

In a way, it’s where we must step out of the boat with Peter and walk on the water toward Jesus. Sure, we’ll stumble, fall, and sink along the way (again, we cannot do this on our own), but we get out of the boat and know what it’s like to have Jesus’ hand locked into ours, to behold His eyes as He holds us and moves us forward into the humanly impossible (Matthew 14:29-31).

It’s a human tendency to try to accomplish only what we’re certain we’re capable of and make sure things are perfect before we step out in faith. We want enough money in our bank account and all the boxes to be checked on the list of “what needs to happen before I can . . .” But, when you don’t take a step because you’re fearful of getting out of the boat, you miss the miracle of being on the water with Jesus.

Ultimately, the riskiest thing for you is to ignore God’s call and try to continue forcing yourself into a life that is no longer meant for you. So as God said to Joshua, “Be strong and courageous” (Joshua 1:9).

Are you dreaming with God about where He wants you to go and what He wants you to do? What do you think that might look like at your church, in your relationships, or in your career?

About this Plan

Lasting Ever

Most of us long for the fairy tale, the “happily ever after,” love everlasting. But then, life happens. Husband-and-wife team Rebecca St. James and Cubbie Fink have learned that the secret of lasting, in faith and in family life, is choosing to endure together, through the challenges and joys of our lives.
