Learning to Practice the Sabbath

DAY 4 OF 5

Where Rest Begins

Part of Sabbath rest is about remembering. Remembering all God has done. Remembering His promises. Remembering that He designed life’s rhythm to operate with six days of work and one day to rest and remember.

Most of us don't know how to rest. We fidget, we grumble, we look for something to do because it is more familiar than just being. We cannot go five minutes in stillness without grabbing our phones. It can also be difficult to remember what God has done when we are constantly doing.

So how do you start resting and remembering? Real rest begins by giving thanks.

What are you grateful for?

When you focus on gratitude, you are reminded of God’s goodness to you, and you can see how He is at work in your life.

Know that it will take some time to learn how to practice the Sabbath, as all new habits do. Extend grace to yourself and others when it doesn't seem as perfect at first as you'd hoped. Just keep at it.

What does a day of rest look like? Share stories, read the Bible, pray with loved ones, laugh a lot, and embrace the kind of rest that refuels not only your body but your spirit, too.

Pause and Consider

Look back on the last six days. What are three things you are grateful for?
