Overcomingনমুনা
I am an overcomer.
When I was growing up in the church, we sang a worship song with the line, “I am an overcomer.” I was a child when I sang those lyrics, yet I still remember the faith in the room as we proclaimed we were overcomers.
It’s a word laden with emotion and force.
I’ve reflected on that word because, as much as I wish I could say I have embodied it, I still grapple with many areas of my life. I have vulnerabilities, insecurities, and shortcomings.
Life is a battle.
It's challenging to be an overcomer when you feel overwhelmed in life. However, overcoming is more than a feeling or an emotion—it is a state of being for those who follow Jesus.
I’m revisiting this word from my childhood because I believe we need a resurgence of this mindset of victory in our lives. If you are done with just trying to survive, just trying to get by, just trying to keep your head above water—if you have a stirring in your heart by the Spirit of God that you were created for more, then this is for you!
In this reading plan, we will explore powerful scriptures to understand what overcoming truly means and what it doesn’t.
Our foundational scripture, John 16:33, establishes a profound posture of confidence: Jesus says, “… I have overcome the world.”
Jesus declares that He has overcome the world. He pronounces this bold statement specifically within the framework of our challenges and tribulations, offering us hope and assurance.
So yes, we have our lived human experience, but we have a Savior who has victoriously triumphed over life and death.
Welcome to this study on the theme of ‘overcoming.’ This introductory and overview reading plan focuses on the biblical idea of overcoming. It will be followed by a series of topical reading plans that delve into overcoming challenges like loneliness, sin, and anxiety.
Jesus is the Overcomer.
If Jesus is the Overcomer, we, too, can embrace our inherited authority and proclaim, “I am an overcomer!”
