Freedom & responsibility
An old saying says that freedom comes with responsibility. When God created Adam and Eve, He gave them free will, right from the start… But He also gave them all the information they needed to be able to make choices they had the freedom to make, so they could make the decisions responsibly, being aware of the consequences.
When we make decisions, we also do so with the freedom to choose… this or that, this way or that way… but we don’t get to choose the consequence of the decision. As believers, we should be even more aware of the importance of weighing up the possible outcomes before we decide to do anything. We need to make sure we’re doing our best to reflect Christ in our lives.
Do we have freedom through life in Christ? Absolutely. He set us free from all the shame of our sinful, old nature. Does that mean we use that freedom to just do anything and everything we feel like? Absolutely not. As children of God, we have the freedom to choose anything and do anything, but we must always keep in mind that our primary objective as believers is to reflect the heart of Christ. To honour Him at all times and to glorify His name. To not selfishly seek our own good, but to always seek the good of others.
Yes, we have freedom, but with that freedom comes responsibility.
The responsibility and consequences are something we should always keep in mind.
