Hebrews

DAY 13 OF 14

Day Thirteen: Travel Light

Hebrews 12 gives us a little pep talk, reminding us that life isn't a 100-meter dash—it's a marathon. It’s going to take some patience. The preacher kicks off by pointing to this "great cloud of witnesses"—basically, all the legends who’ve run this race before us. They didn’t just survive; they thrived. They didn’t lug around unnecessary baggage either. They traveled light.

Imagine yourself at the airport. You’ve seen those first-time travelers, right? They’re hauling around suitcases the size of small countries, bumping into everyone, stressed out, sweating like they’re running a marathon—oh wait, they kind of are. Now, seasoned travelers, the pros? They’ve learned the art of packing light. A carry-on, and they’re good to go. In Hebrews 12, we’re being told to be like those pros. Drop the baggage—sin, bitterness, unforgiveness. You’re not going to make it lugging all that extra stuff around. It’s time to let it go.

But it’s not just about shedding weight; it’s about embracing discipline. Discipline—everyone’s favorite word, right? Here’s the deal: God disciplines us because He loves us. Think about it. If a parent lets their kid run wild, that kid isn’t just a headache for the parent—they’re a nightmare for everyone around them. Discipline shapes us, prunes us, and makes us fit for the long haul. When God disciplines us, it’s not just for our sake but for everyone around us too. It's His way of making sure we’re not a hazard to ourselves or to others.

And then there’s this wild bit about Esau. This guy traded his birthright—his calling, his destiny—for a single meal. One meal! Paul is like, “Don’t be like Esau!” Don’t trade your calling for some temporary gratification, whether it’s success, comfort, or a moment of pleasure. Hold onto your discipline, keep running the race, and don’t sell your future for something as fleeting as a quick fix.

The chapter ends with a bombshell: “Our God is a consuming fire.” Yeah, that’s intense. But here’s the thing—this fire isn’t here to destroy you; it’s here to refine you. There’s a kingdom we’re receiving that can’t be shaken, so let’s be grateful, worship with reverence, and keep our eyes on the prize. The party in heaven is waiting, with an angelic gathering that makes Coachella look like a backyard BBQ. Don’t get distracted by the old mountains and temporary treasures; keep your focus on the new Jerusalem and run that race like you’ve got nothing holding you back—because with Jesus, you don’t.
