Daily Wisdom for Men

DAY 3 OF 7

Burn Plows, Kill Cows

Elisha was chosen to follow in Elijah’s prophetic footsteps. He was a farmer so when he burned the plows and killed the cows, he was literally and figuratively leaving everything behind. This was a demonstration of a wholehearted commitment to God, leaving behind the past and dedicating ourselves to His calling. It's a reminder that following God often requires us to abandon the safety of our comfort zones.

Burning the plows means leaving our comfort zones, just as Elisha did. He left behind the security of his livelihood as a farmer to follow God's call through Elijah. It requires trust in God's guidance and a willingness to let go of control.

Elisha's act of killing the cows and burning his plowing equipment symbolized breaking attachments to his past life. We may need to let go of past sins, regrets, or negative influences that hold us back from fully following God. And, we may need to leave our source of security and certain provisions too.

Elisha's response to Elijah's call was an immediate and wholehearted commitment. It left no “plan B”. He didn't look back; he followed Elijah without hesitation. Burning the plows in our lives means fully embracing God's call on our lives, whatever that may be. It's about dedicating ourselves to His service, allowing Him to lead and direct our steps, and being willing to follow wherever He leads.

Father, help me let go of plan B and be completely obedient to Your calling in my life. Amen.
