Day 2: I Can’t Wait!
“I can’t wait to be grown!” I said that quite often when I was a kid. Well, I didn’t actually say it aloud for my mother to hear me - that might not have gone too well – but I certainly said it in my head whenever my circumstances made me feel restrained, controlled, or boxed in. The truth is that I didn’t really believe what I was saying. I enjoyed being a kid, and never wanted to rush into adulthood. I did look forward to being grown but I was in no hurry. I think it is because I got a good look at the balance of both the freedom and responsibility that adulthood brings.
Being an adult is more than just a phase; it’s a continuous journey of managing life’s demands, making tough decisions, and growing in responsibility. Here’s why:
- Your lack of preparedness and awareness without adequate knowledge or skills in various areas can drive up your frustration and disturb your peace.
- Your exposure to social pressure to confirm and conform to certain standards or meet specific milestones can create stress and anxiety through societal expectations and peer pressure.
- Your access to knowledge involves a continuous process of learning and adapting to new situations, which can be both challenging and rewarding.
- Your feelings of uncertainty about the future and the fear of making the wrong decisions or facing unexpected challenges can be daunting.
Any of that sound familiar?
All of these reasons point us back to the widespread use of the word "adulting" by way of social media and its relatability to the experiences of many who have helped solidify it as a popular and recognizable term as a way to bond over shared experiences and create a sense of generational identity.
But adulting, like maturity, is a process. And, while it comes with its challenges, it's also an opportunity—a chance to grow not just in life, but in our walk with God.
Today, let’s shift our focus from the weight of our responsibilities to the God who walks with us through every task. Let’s trust that He is equipping us with everything we need to fulfill our duties and that He is working in us to mature us into the people He created us to be.
Reflections:
- What responsibilities feel the heaviest in your life right now?
- How can you rely more on God’s strength rather than your own in managing these responsibilities?
- What practical steps can you take to better manage your responsibilities while staying connected to God?
Affirmations:
- I trust God to help me manage the responsibilities of adulthood.
- I am not alone in my adulting journey; God is with me every step of the way.
- I am capable and equipped through Christ to handle life’s challenges.
About this Plan
In this devotional, we will explore adulting - a colloquial term that emerged in recent years to describe the process of behaving like a responsible adult. Though the term is used with adulthood feeling hard, adulting can become less of a burden and more of a blessing when viewed through the lens of faith. We’ll look at how God can use our everyday responsibilities throughout adulthood to mature us, refine us, and draw us closer to Him.
