Anchored in Hope: Help for Loving Someone in Addiction

DAY 1 OF 5

When we love someone who is in addiction, we tend to want to present a false front. We people believe we have to have it all together, when really inside we are a complete mess. We keep our secrets behind closed doors while trying to convince everyone we’ve never been better.

But in reality we are screaming and in pain on the inside. We are broken.

It’s so hard to admit we are weighed down by the shame of the storm going on around us and that we are telling lies... not just to others, but to ourselves.

Lies like:

“It’s not as bad as what others are going through.”

“I need to stay strong.”

“I don’t want to be a burden on someone else.”

Do you resonate? Do those sound like lies you have been telling yourself?

My prayer for this reading plan is to help you be open and honest with yourself. I want you to begin to find healing for any wounds you may have. I want you to connect with God and free yourself of distractions.

My name is Amy LaRue, and I work full time helping the loved ones of addicts find hope in God and in one another. My world came apart when I discovered my husband’s alcoholism, but through a lot of work, a lot of prayer, and a lot of help from others, I am now deeply anchored in the hope of Christ. My prayer is that, by the end of this reading plan, you too will find yourself anchored in hope.

Take some time today to write down the lies you’ve been telling yourself. Then write down the truths you SHOULD be telling yourself instead. Compare the two and prayerfully commit to speaking only truth.
