How to Be a Modern Monk

DAY 3 OF 11

Day 3 — Practicing Prayer

Prayer is more than reciting words or asking for favors. It’s a way of life, a constant connection to God that shapes our hearts, minds, and actions. When we cultivate a life of prayer, we’re not just going through the motions—we’re opening ourselves up to profound change and supernatural intervention.

The practice of prayer isn’t about perfection or eloquence, either. It’s about consistency and heart. Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray, showing us the importance of making time for this spiritual connection. Whether in the car, the shower, or a dedicated quiet space in our homes, finding a “certain place” to pray can help us develop a consistent prayer habit.

Prayer infuses our lives with hope, purpose, and divine perspective. When we pray, we receive God’s heart for our families, work, communities, and even strangers. Without prayer, we risk losing our hearts and becoming disconnected from our purpose and others.

But prayer isn’t just for our benefit. It’s a powerful force for change in the world around us. The Bible tells us that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much” (James 5:16). This means our prayers have real power to effect change, whether in our personal lives or on a global scale.

But what about when our prayers aren’t answered in the way we hope? It’s important to remember that God hears all prayers but doesn’t always answer them as we expect or desire. This doesn’t mean we should stop praying. Instead, it’s an invitation to trust in God’s wisdom and timing, even when we don’t understand.

Developing a life of prayer doesn’t happen overnight. It often starts as a discipline – something we do out of obedience or habit. But over time, it can become a delight, a cherished part of our day that we look forward to. Prayer becomes the hub around which all other aspects of our lives revolve, bringing coherence and purpose to our existence.

As you cultivate a life of prayer, you may become more aware of God’s presence in your daily life. You might notice answers to prayer in unexpected places or feel a deeper sense of peace amidst life’s storms. Prayer can transform not just your circumstances but your very self.

About this Plan

How to Be a Modern Monk

In our modern world, we’ve removed many ancient practices that build robust human beings. Is there a better way to live? A practice that could lead us to wholeness? When we think about monks, we may imagine shaved heads, robes behind cloistered walls, and individuals living their monk life, out of sync with our modern-day lives and practices. Jude Fouquier shows how their practices can affect our lives in this reading plan.
