GOD’S POWER DISPLAY TEAM
Some of the most exhilarating stories in Scripture are the ones where God reveals His power and omnipotence to us.
In 1 Kings 18, God and His team showed up for an all-out power contest. Elijah followed God’s instructions to go against all natural laws of fire to amplify the effect. And God did not disappoint. “Immediately the fire of the Lord flashed down from heaven and burned up the young bull, the wood, the stones, and the dust. It even licked up all the water in the trench” (v. 38, NLT). I love how it’s called “the fire of the Lord.” Whatever God decides to use in His displays of power belongs to Him!
For example, all the rock formations under the earth belong to God to use for any purpose that He chooses. I can just imagine these giant rocks waiting in anticipation for God’s instruction to “Shake it!” Because few things shout “Power” like a timely earthquake.
No wonder God instructed the earth to display his power when Jesus died on the cross. “Then Jesus shouted out again, and He released his spirit. At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split apart, and tombs opened” (Matthew 27:50-52, NLT). God conquered death! And when Jesus’ resurrection was announced, why not give another rocky team a chance to dance? “Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it” (Matthew 28:2, NLT).
Have you ever become aware of God’s power through an event in nature? What emotions are stirred in your heart during a loud thunderstorm? What do you think wants to tell us about Himself when He sends spectacular lightning patterns through the sky?
Let us take time to acknowledge the Lord when He shows Himself to us through mighty acts in nature. And let us worship Him for blessing us with spectacular displays to enjoy. “The voice of the Lord strikes with bolts of lightning. The voice of the Lord makes the barren wilderness quake... The voice of the Lord twists mighty oaks and strips the forests bare. In His temple, everyone shouts, ‘Glory!’” (Psalm 29:7-9, NLT)
About this Plan
Are you someone who feels closer to God when you spend time in nature? Has God ever revealed Himself to you through animals, plants, or other parts of creation? In this plan, we will explore how all creation forms part of one team to God’s glory.
