Leaving the False Self Behind
Thinking of just how much effort we put into projecting the perfect image is sobering to say the least. Even after exhausting every false-self-development strategy imaginable, we still look in the mirror at the end of the day and wonder, “Am I enough, yet?”
However, an endless state of striving doesn't have to stay our reality, when we allow the truth to transform us. Even before you were born, you have had an identity that is unshakable: you are unconditionally loved by God. You are created in His image.
If we ever hope to truly know ourselves, we must face the facts. We are at war with a real enemy, and he wants to create as much distance between us and God’s truth as possible.
Every lie we believe that says we have to earn God’s love gives power to our false selves. These lies obscure our vision of who we really are in God’s image.
The moment we begin to doubt God’s unconditional love for us is the moment we begin to fall. At no point did the enemy ever tell Adam and Eve to eat the fruit. All he needed to do was sow the lie. The enemy is not the tempter of immoral behavior; he is the father of lies.
Yet even when we believe the lies and miss the mark, we are pursued with a love that is both relentless and gentle. Seeing through our masks, God recognizes us as lost children without Him. God, the Good Father, fights for His beloved children.
This is who you are—His beloved child. You are not lost—you are found in God’s perfect love. Your identity is not a mystery—you are made in the image of the Creator and King of the world.
Reflection: Are you ready to take off your masks, reach out to God, and begin the journey of living as your truest self?
Prayer: God, I know You love me. Transform my mind and renew my spirit as I seek to know who I am in You. Amen.
About this Plan
Have your fears and insecurities led you into an identity that feels foreign? How drastic is the difference between your truest self and the image you project to others? In partnership with LUMO and OneHope, and based on a sermon by Pastor Tyler Staton, this 7-day plan will lead you in exploring the startling truth behind “the false self.” We would like to thank LUMO, and Tyler Staton from Bridgetown Church for providing this plan.
