Understanding the Last Supper: The Connection Between Galilean Weddings and the Role of Communion

DAY 2 OF 4

Matthew 26:26-29 — The Significance of Jesus’ Last Supper (Lord's Supper)

Reflection
In this passage, Jesus is having a meal with His disciples. He takes bread, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to them, saying, “This is my body.” He then takes a cup of wine, gives thanks, and tells them, “This is my blood, which makes the new agreement between God and people. It is poured out to forgive sins.” Jesus also says He will not drink wine again until He drinks it new with them in God’s Kingdom.

Jesus used simple elements—bread and wine, to convey profound truths about His sacrifice. The bread represents His body, which would be broken for humanity. The wine represents His blood, which would be poured out for the forgiveness of sins.

Jesus said He would not drink wine again until He drinks it with His followers in God's Kingdom. This statement points to a time in the future when Jesus will celebrate with His followers in Heaven. The future celebration is a time to celebrate the redemption and forgiveness that Jesus’ sacrifice brings. It’s a reminder of the complete restoration and joy we will experience because of His work.

Questions
How does thinking about the bread and wine deepen your personal understanding of Jesus’ sacrifice and what He did for us?

How does the promise of a future celebration with Jesus impact your current perspective on life?

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 — The Meaning of the Lord’s Supper in Paul’s Letters

Reflection
In his letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul addresses several problems and questions the church is facing. One of these issues involves how they are conducting the Lord’s Supper; or Communion. Paul writes to correct misunderstandings and to highlight the true meaning and importance of this practice.

Paul’s teaching about Communion shows us how important this practice is for remembering Jesus’ sacrifice and celebrating the new relationship with God. Today, Communion helps us stay connected with Christ, celebrate His grace, and look forward to His return. It’s a reminder to live out our faith in our daily lives.

Questions
What personal meaning does Communion hold for you?

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the powerful reminder of Your sacrifice. Help me to fully understand and appreciate the new covenant You have established. As I partake in communion, help me to fully grasp its meaning and significance. Strengthen my connection with You and with others, and guide me to live in a way that honors Your new covenant. I look forward with hope to the day we will celebrate together in Your Father’s kingdom. In Your mighty name, Amen.
