DAY 9 OF 12

The Posture of a Diva

Orphaned at a young age, Esther was raised by her cousin Mordecai, during the time of the Jews’ captivity in Persia. She was among those recruited to be considered for queen. Upon her arrival at the palace, she became the favorite of one of the head eunuchs, Haggai. Under his tutelage and special care, she blossomed into a rare beauty who learned how to dress for the part. She was eventually chosen by the king to become his next queen.

After being crowned, Esther becomes privy to a plot by an evil man named Haman to exterminate the Jews. Her cousin beseeches her to intercede on her people’s behalf to the king. She is reluctant at first because she has not been called for an audience with the king. Under the law, if she appeared before him without being called, she would be killed. Desperate, Mordecai convinces her to think beyond her personal security, suggesting perhaps her becoming queen was a God-given assignment to save a nation. In the face of this bold and sobering statement, Esther takes courage and goes to the king. After serving him and softening his heart, she wins the king’s support and circumvents the plot against her people.

Esther could have left her fellow countrymen to fend for themselves. She could have felt that she was above having to heed her older cousin’s instructions and rebelled against authority. Instead, she submitted to his wise counsel as well as God’s direction.

She knew how to use what she had, a stunning combination of beauty and wisdom, to get what she wanted. Her humility and willingness to listen to Mordecai was the stepping-stone to promotion in her life. She stepped outside her comfort zone to save her people.

The counsel of her cousin—instructing her to look beyond the fabulous glitz and sumptuous lifestyle of the palace and focus on her purpose—had a resounding effect on Esther’s view of life and how she was to live it.

Div-otion

Dear heavenly Father, help me to remember that I am a reflection of Your handiwork at all times. Guide me and help me to take proper care of the vessel You have created. Help me to wisely display it in a fashion that will reflect the beauty You’ve placed within me and bring honor to Your name. Amen.
