Becoming More Like Christ Through Your Church

DAY 4 OF 7

Grow as a Disciple of Christ in the Church by Fostering Unity

Fostering unity in the church is essential for growing as a disciple of Christ. Jesus urged His followers to be as one, highlighting the importance of unity within the body of believers. In John 17:21, Jesus prayed, “I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me” (NLT). This prayer underscores that our unity as believers serves as a powerful testimony to the world of God’s love and the truth of the gospel.

The metaphor of the body of Christ, as described by the apostle Paul, clearly illustrates that each member of the body must act unselfishly to maintain unity. He writes in 1 Corinthians 12:12, “The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ” (NLT). Each believer has a unique role and function, and for the body to work effectively, every part must work together harmoniously. This requires us to put aside personal agendas and focus on the common good of the church.

Exhibiting unity in the church involves quelling gossip and fostering an environment of mutual respect and love. Gossip can be incredibly damaging to the church. Proverbs 16:28 warns, “A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends” (NLT). By addressing and stopping gossip, we help create a church environment where trust and love can flourish, thus promoting unity.

Another way to show unity is by serving other members of the church. Jesus set the ultimate example of servant leadership, and He calls us to follow in His footsteps. Galatians 5:13 encourages, “For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love” (NLT). Serving others selflessly builds strong bonds within the church and reflects Christ’s love to the world.

As we become unified in the church, we can demonstrate that same unity in our families, workplaces, and other areas of our lives. Unity within the church teaches us how to live harmoniously with others, regardless of differences. It equips us with the skills to resolve conflicts, show compassion, and work collaboratively, extending the love and harmony we experience in the church to every aspect of our lives.

By fostering unity in the church, we grow as disciples of Christ, exemplifying His love and purpose in all areas of our lives.

About this Plan

Becoming More Like Christ Through Your Church

From Acts 2 to Revelation 3, Scripture focuses on God’s work through the local church. Indeed, the local church is God’s 'plan A' for His mission on Earth, and He didn’t give us a 'plan B'. If we truly want to make a difference in this world, we will do so joyfully through our local church by serving others and serving the world.
