The Power of Words

DAY 5 OF 7

Bless Others

I am amazed at the power words can have in a person’s life. I still carry some negative thoughts and feelings about myself because of things said to me in the past.

But I also carry with me incredibly empowering feelings because of what has been said to me in the past.

Words can make a huge difference in a person’s life.

As men, we can often be short on words. Research shows that most women speak an average of 20,000 words per day—approximately 13,000 more than the average male.

Because of that, we men need to make the most of our words.

It means a lot to tell our children or spouse we love them. It carries a lot of weight when we praise those around us for the things they have control over.

For example, it’s great to tell your wife or daughter that she’s beautiful, but that has more to do with her genetics than her. Tell her she’s beautiful, but also tell her she is kind, loyal, and brave. These are the kinds of things that she has made determined choices to become.

In every marriage, there will be times of disagreement and arguments. Learn to fight fair.

Especially when it comes to the words you use. Never swear. Never use put-downs. Never use words like, “You always…” or “You never…”. Stick to the facts and speak gently and with love.

Speak a blessed future over your kids’ lives. Notice their noble and honourable character qualities and comment on them. It takes effort on your part, but the payoffs are huge.

We have a unique position in our wives and children’s lives to make a massive difference with our words. Let’s be men who bless these special people whom God has entrusted to us.

Prayer: Lord, help me be thoughtful and generous with the words I use to bless those around me, especially my wife and children. Help me build them up and not tear them down. Help me make it clear that I love them and am very proud of them. Thank You for the words You have spoken to me that have given me my true identity. Help me share this gift with others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Reflection: What five things do you really appreciate about your wife’s character? What are five things that make you really proud of your kids? What are five things you appreciate about a brother in Christ? Write them down and then tell them.

About this Plan

The Power of Words

As men, we can speak life into our family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. We can also use our words to cause significant damage to those same people. We will take this devotional to explore how to do good, honor God, and bless others with what we say.
