Battle Scars

Are you living with any scars?

Although physical scars usually indicate some kind of trauma, unseen emotional wounds can also have devastating effects. Sometimes, the scars, pain, and shame of our past negatively affect our present and future.

When we’re hurting, we often seek temporary fixes to numb the pain. Over-exercising. Binge-watching TV. Maxing out credit cards on shopping sprees. Throwing ourselves into work. Gambling. Abusing food, alcohol, and other substances. Seeking comfort in unhealthy relationships.

God does not overlook these struggles in His infinite wisdom and compassion. Jesus invites us to come as we are: wounded, broken, and authentic. He also empathizes with our trials because Jesus was tempted, too. He understands how alluring these empty solutions feel in our moments of weakness.

Despite our battle scars, God can repurpose our pain to craft a narrative of redemption from our brokenness. He is ever-present, picking up the shattered pieces of our lives to make us whole again … stronger and more beautiful in the mending.

If you’re weary of battling shame, guilt, addiction, self-loathing, or exhaustion, ask the Lord to help you and breathe new life into your spirit. You were not created to wage war or bear burdens alone.

To care for others, you first have to care for yourself. We must prioritize caring for the body and mind God has given us so we can properly reflect His image and serve those around us.


Application

  • Reflect and identify the biggest emotional and mental battle scars burdening you. Ask the Lord to reveal whether there’s any unforgiveness or bitterness in your heart that is causing you (or those you love) continued pain. If there is, ask Him to help you forgive and begin healing. Remember: The Lord is the Great Restorer. He wants to help you become healthy and whole.
  • Prayerfully ask the Lord to use your battle scars for His glory. Even though it hurts to talk about pain, doing so can sometimes be the bridge that connects you to another person who is struggling. There is power in sharing your story.
  • Thank the Lord that He is always with you and won’t forsake you. Consider writing yourself notes or setting timers to remind you to thank God for this truth throughout the day.
