The Wound
Revelation 3:20- “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”
It’s not just one wound. It’s many wounds that the masculine heart will endure. If you notice in your own life, isn't it true the wounds that you've received seem to have a theme to them? They seem to carry the same message. The most common are:
- You’re alone
- You are not good enough
- You are powerless
- You are week
- You are too much this or not enough that
- You are unattractive
- You question your sexuality
And the thing is the wound(s) shape(d) us. All of our addictions are shaped by our wounds:
- The need for sex
- The need for attention
- The need to be successful
- The need to be in charge all the time
- The need for love/belonging
- Drugs
- Alcohol
- Money
The good news is that addictions are not the issue. We use our addictions to medicate the wounded heart. Guys are famous at mishandling the wound of the heart. Most guys deny the wound of the heart even exists or simply try to minimize it. “Yeah, things were kind of rough growing up, but that was years ago. I am past it now.” Or guys admit the wound but won’t admit that they have been shaped by it. Or guys embrace the wound as their identity and then live in the addictions to numb the pain but resist allowing themselves to be healed.
There is good news fellas! God will often use some disruption or internal crisis in your life to come into your calloused, shutdown heart to rescue you. He will do whatever it takes to rescue your heart. He will sometimes even allow you to be wounded again in the same place to get a foothold in the door. He is relentless in the pursuit of your heart for the purpose of healing and freedom.
