What Does the Bible Say About Water Baptism?

DAY 2 OF 4

The meaning of water baptism

From the moment you say ‘yes’ to King Jesus, you are born again. Your old, sinful nature dies in that moment. We call that repentance. You turn away from your old life and receive a new nature from God.

Now, you shouldn’t keep dragging that old life with you on your shoulders.

No, you must bury that old man.

Are you ‘buried’ already?

Water baptism is nothing more and nothing less than your funeral.

You die with Christ.

You are buried with Christ.

And you are raised up again with Christ.

It is the confirmation that you have changed identity.

From darkness into light, from the position of a slave to that of a son.

Water baptism testifies of your rebirth. It is an expression of the choice that you have made to follow Jesus and that you have died with Him. It’s simply obedience in faith to the Word of God.

People often wonder: Do I have to be baptized to be saved? No. Your rebirth is not dependent on the water baptism (Mark 16:16)

Imagine you accept Jesus today. There is no immediate water surrounding you and therefore you postpone the baptism to tomorrow, but you die in the night. Are you lost because you’re not baptized? No.

The moment you repent and accept Jesus, you are ‘immediately saved’ and ‘immediately a new creation’. The water baptism is a testimony of that to the outside world.

And it makes a ‘statement’ in the heavenly realms.

‘I belong to Jesus now!’

It is the next step of faith that you take after you have chosen for Jesus.
